Lava Glow at the Big Crater

Thursday night I went to the top of Volcanoes National Park. At night, in the pitch dark of the park, it is possible to photograph the “glow” of lava from the crater.  It is GORGEOUS!!!  I would love to peer over the edge and look in – except for the heat, noxious volcanic gases, long hike and intense fear of death by volcano.

It was freezing cold out – and by the time I finally figured out how I wanted to shoot the picture, the clouds came in to cover the starry sky, wind picked up and it started to rain.  Chris had better luck than I did – think I may need a wide-angle lens next time 🙂  In the meanwhile, this is what I ended up with:
